“Chime A” is a Surrealist painting by E’wao Kagoshima, portraying a floating geometric shape (rectangular box) as the central object with spiritual, natural and historical elements attached and around it, including humans, at least one cat, a shrouded/ethereal conch shell, and some mythical creatures such as a dragon and what appears to be a human/snake. The floating box suggests a world floating in a universe, with streams or rays of light and clouds in hues of aqua blue, purple, and yellow/orange.
“Azure Deep A” portrays a floating object in a sea-like or air-like background. The object resembles a chalky rock or cocoon, and has many human figures surrounding it as well as some animals. The figures differ greatly in period and culture. Colors in this painting are vivid blue and green, with white and red accents.
Azure Deep B portrays life both under and atop the ocean. Like many of Kagoshima’s paintings, the idea of sea and sky appear to be ambiguous, overlapping and continuous, represented by a deep blue. Moonlight from above shines down on a monolith resembling a jellyfish or mushroom, while smaller jellyfish-comets float above. Behind a rocky shore, a human girue stands alone in a rowboat. Another human is either standing atop or inside the structure, and two less clear but still apparent humans lie together on top of the structure. This painting is paired with “Azure Deep A.”
Curfew A portrays a floating object in a sea-like background. The object is reminiscent of a submarine or tanker that is partly underwater and partly above, or perhaps an iceberg. It also has somewhat of a whale-like appearance. There is an active human figure running or dancing on top of the floating mass, and three figures that appear to be breathing underwater, within the tank. The human figures within appear to be skeletons. By examining the background, it is difficult to discern whether the tank is in the water or floating above it. This painting has many shades of vivid blues and aquas, topped with a pink sun.
