Mahlstedt Gallery is located in a historic, neo-classical two-story building built in 1920 for the J. A. Mahlstedt Lumber and Coal Company. The gallery is named in honor of the Mahlstedt family, paying homage for all their contributions to New Rochelle and the greater Westchester area. The deliberate positioning of the building allowed for the rear of the building to be used as a lumber yard for the Lumber and Coal company.

The building is directly opposite the Solder's Monument on the west junction of Huguenot and Main streets. After the depression, all of the Mahlstedt businesses were shut down and the building was temporarily used by the U.S. Post Office, the New Rochelle Water Company, and the Landis Hardware Store. The Mahlstedt building is now the headquarters for Parchem-fine & specialty chemicals, marketing technology, a leading global distributor.

In 2010, the newly restored building received a Heritage Award, officially recognizing it as one of the most unique historical sites in Westchester County, NY.
